Tasting Notes 

Our 2023 The Outlier Grenache is a lighter style of old vine Grenache. Aromas of rhubarb, wild strawberry, and delicate spice notes. An extremely drinkable Barossa Valley Grenache best enjoyed slightly chilled.

 

From old vines planted around the 1940s south of Tanunda, this is a light-bodied Grenache of tang and spice, making for an elegant lunchtime style. Soft, gentle tannins and tangy cool vintage acidity accent strawberry and rhubarb character.

The Vineyard

The Dahlitz vineyard, located just south of Tanunda township, features old vines planted in the 1940s. The vineyard's soil consists of black cracking clay, interspersed with remnants of alluvial floodplain soil from the nearby North Para River, situated to the east. The vines are hand-pruned using the spur pruning method. They benefit from the cooling effects of the prevailing south-easterly winds that funnel down the riverbanks, providing relief during the warm ripening months.

 

The Season 

The 2023 harvest was the latest in over two decades. Spring saw more than double the usual rainfall. Cooler temperatures delayed growth stages. Summer was also cooler, with no heatwaves, slow ripening periods and later than usual harvesting dates. This resulted in an atypical season for the Barossa Valley.

 

The Winemaking  

We handpicked and crushed the grapes, leaving 10% as whole bunches for added complexity. The grapes were cold soaked for two days before fermentation to extract maximum colour, tannins and flavours. After fermentation, the wine stayed on the skins for 12 days to enhance flavour and structure. It was then basket pressed directly into large seasoned French oak barrels. The wine matured in barrels for 8 months and was bottled unfiltered to retain maximum freshness.
